The Project

Sweepstakes is a film about a Somali family, torn apart by the civil war, and trying to rebuild their life in Toronto in the early 1990’s.

About the Film:

From the team that brought you the documentary about the life of Amin Amir comes a film will attempt to capture a story that is familiar to so many Somali families who came to Canada in the  1990’s. It is a story of displacement and resettlement, of a family trying to survive, pick up the pieces and move forward together. This is an important story that needs to be preserved in history for future generations of Somali-Canadians, as well as a broader Canadian audience. It is the story of a community, struggling and persevering.

This project is being supported by the Toronto Arts Council, the Ontario Arts Council, the Canada Arts Council and the National Film Board.
